Bodrum and British travelers
In the 19 century, Bodrum witnessed the arrival of many British travelers. These foreign travelers first discovered the Mausoleum frises and lion statutes at the walls if the castle. These artifacts were taken to England with the help of the British Ambassador Lord Stratford Cunning with the Ferman or royal order of the Sultan. Ten year later, Sir Newton, British archaeologist, sent by BritishMuseum to collect the archaeological values of the ancient world came to Bodrum. After visiting major archaeological sights, he started searching for the mausoleum. Following the descriptions of Roman architect Vitrivius, Newton discovered the remains of mausoleum under the Bodrum houses. Newton eventually transported all the architectural pieces and statues from the site of the mausoleum to a British battleship which took this valuable cargo to England.
